Fragrance Free World's Message echoed by Khy'em Amri!

Fragrance Free World is trying to get the message out that the "fragrances" that you buy in the store are not natural. Whether you buy a cologne, perfume, "air freshener" or some other product to which a "fragrance" has been added, it just isn't natural. AND, it isn't healthy.
Are you familiar with those commercials for "air freshener" that say things like "candles don't disperse the scent throughout the room"? They're pushing plug-in "air fresheners" or special candles and such that are made to help the scent quickly disperse throughout the room.

But, how in the world do they do that? The answer is chemicals called VOCs. The key word is volatile:

volatile - easily evaporated at normal temperatures

And just to be clear:

evaporate - turn from liquid into vapor

Hence, the fragrance molecules turn into a vapor at room temperature and can disperse throughout the room. The bad news is that the modern fragrance is a mess of chemicals to begin with. So they spread throughout the room. Furthermore, the fragrance is carried by the VOCs, so the VOCs spread throughout the room as well.

They wind up on your clothes, on your skin, in your lungs as you breathe, on any food in the room (even the grocery store), and in your stomach once you eat that food.

The worst news is that some of the same chemicals that everyone screams about if they get in our landfill are also used in modern fragrances. Chemicals in the landfill could wind up in our drinking water. We've likely all read about the benzene - a well-known carcinogen - in a landfill. But now it has a faster route to your body - the modern fragrance!

You look dubious. You're thinking "Surely the government wouldn't let this happen to us. Doesn't the FDA police these things?"

Sadly, the answer is "No".

It's got to do with something called a trade secret. It's the same reason no one really knows what's in Coca-Cola. Or why the KFC recipe is such a secret. The fragrance industry is afraid that if we had their ingredient list, any of us could reproduce that fragrance. As if! Right. I could give you the list of ingredients in my spaghetti sauce, but that wouldn't mean you could duplicate it. There's more to it than that.

Yet their lobbies have lots of money, so they keep their secret.

Honestly, I don't know how those people sleep at night. Knowing what they put in their products, and what it does to people. Clearly, they have no conscience.

Or, maybe their delusional.

For a long time, the fragrance industry claimed that the only possible physical reaction to a fragrance was dermatitis. At the spot on the skin where it was applied.

But that totally defies logic. We now know that our skin absorbs many things that are applied to it. Hence the success of the nicotine patch, the pain patch and the birth control patch. And that's just the beginning. If the scent reaches your nose, then it gets into your nose, and your lungs.

Now, think about the "air freshener" (a badly named product if there ever was one). The grocery stores where I live like to pump gallons of "air freshener" into their stores. My guess is that it is because our city has been named the "Sweatiest City".

Aside - Where I live, there's one grocery that has pretty much run all the others out of town. Any more their only competition is the discount stores turned "super" and the "wholesale" warehouses. About 2 years ago, I found that the soap in their restroom was identified as "fragrance free". It was stated that it was safe for use by those who handled food. It was some time later that I noticed that this soap was gone. About the time they started pumping in the "air freshener". Odd, don't you think?

So this chemical soup-turned-vapor is floating through the air in your grocery store. It gets on your produce. Maybe it comes off when you wash it. It also penetrates plastic. Oh, yes, plastic is very porous. So that means it gets into an awful lot of the food in the grocery. And so, you eat it.

No, I'm not making this up. If I could make things like this up, I'd be competing with Stephen King or some other author.

Sadly, there are many that would like to silence people like me. Trouble makers that we are. Quite politically incorrect.

This is not the mad rantings of one individual. There are many people that are impacted by these chemicals. They can affect anyone at anytime causing incapacitating and even disabling illness. Who can be affected by these chemicals?

* People with Asthma
* Developing Children - Before and After Birth
* People with COPD or other breathing disorders
* People with Emphysema
* People with Autoimmune Disorders (MS, Lupus, and others)

* People with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ADHD
* Formerly Healthy People who�ve been exposed to too many chemicals
* Who can say? You could be next!

Dear Mr. President Obama,

As a user of medical marijuana, I was very upset with the comments made by Director Kerlikowske from the Office of National Drug Control Policy on Wednesday. In saying that marijuana is "dangerous and has no medicinal benefit," Director Kerlikowske took a Bush-era approach to drug policy that ignores both scientific evidence and common sense. This has got to stop! I personally suffer from Leaky Gut Syndrome induced by my Celiac Disease - which causes immense pain in my body - this is mitigated by marijuana, and can't be treated with NSAID's as they are part of the cause of the problem.

Denying the medical efficacy of marijuana is just plain absurd. There is abundant, VERY ABUNDANT scientific evidence that marijuana is a SAFE & EFFECTIVE medicine for many people. In 1999, the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported, "Nausea, appetite loss, pain, and anxiety are all afflictions of wasting, and all can be mitigated by marijuana." Since then, extensive research has confirmed marijuana's medical benefits. For example, three University of California studies published since February 2007 have found that marijuana relieved neuropathic pain, a type of pain that commonly afflicts patients with multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes, for which conventional pain drugs are notoriously inadequate.

Mr. President, you have stated your desire to see policy decisions driven by scientific rigor countless times. On this count, Director Kerlikowske has failed. I hope you will do something to right this mistake.

Secondly, I find it unfortunate that Director Kerlikowske defined marijuana as a dangerous drug when the evidence suggests that it's far less harmful than alcohol and tobacco. The consumption of alcohol is the direct cause of tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S. each year, but there has never been a marijuana overdose death in history. The dependence and harm associated with tobacco use in America is devastating. By comparison, marijuana is remarkably benign.

For eight years under the Bush administration, Americans watched the federal government ignore science and common sense. I hope that you will take a different approach to your discussion of this issue in the future. Please address this swiftly and intelligently.

However,
I would like to present the idea that the first, and easily mainstream, step on the road to getting the mj legal would be to first get the hemp legal.

MJ is regarded as a drug, but most people don't realize that Hemp isn't pharmacologically "active" . Also, while there are complex emotions still looming over MJ and whether or not it should be legal, for this or that reason - and I repeat, I do believe it should be legalized...
I'm simply pointing out, that in the bigger picture - it may be wise to get hemp legal - as there are countless reasons why it shouldn't be forbidden, especially since we Import This Commodity! The case for Hemp is Overwhelming, whereas with Marijuana there are obstacles. There is a societal resistance to allowing the use of "intoxicants" and their being made available to the youth...I whole heartedly agree that the prohibition is fool-hearted against one of God's Good Green Herbs (bearing seed). But look at all the "Economically Stimulating" benefits of Hemp and ask: Why is this Good, versatile HARMLESS, BENIGN, Plant Illegal? I think when the people understand why Hemp should be grown here - they are one step closer to "legalizing the sacramental medicine". Common law principles

Deadly force used in self-defense is justified at common law when: The defendant is a non-aggressor and the defendant reasonably believes that deadly force is necessary to repel an imminent, unlawful, and deadly attack by the other person. This set of elements also fit the structure of a justification defense, namely: (1) Proportionality – the force used is proportional and reasonable in relation to the harm threatened. (2) Necessity – the force used is necessary to protect the interest at stake. Deadly force generally means either force likely to cause death or serious bodily harm. In order to justify the use of self-defense on the basis of deadly force, you must be trying to repel deadly force in response. You can use deadly force to defend against potential crimes other than murder.

At common law, if you act in justifiable self-defense, you’re not guilty of any crime. Even if you prove all the elements of the crime of murder, if you have a justification, then you’re not guilty. Even if you have the intent to kill that usually constitutes malice, you may not be guilty of the offense.

The “aggressor” issue

You can’t use deadly force in self-defense if you’re the aggressor at the time of the conflict. In order to find the aggressor, we are looking for an “affirmative unlawful act reasonably calculated to produce” a potentially fatal fight. Self-defense cannot be claimed by someone who deliberately puts himself in danger.

“Reasonable belief” at common law

Say a defendant shoots someone believing they have a real gun when the gun is actually fake. Under the reasonable belief requirement, even though the person couldn’t or wouldn’t have killed the defendant, the defendant still is acquitted even though what he did was objectively wrong. However, if, on the other hand, the gun was obviously a toy then the defendant loses the self-defense claim because the belief about the threat wasn’t objectively reasonable.

People v. Goetz – The reasonable person standard for self-defense as justification is an objective standard. Goetz felt that the prosecution gave an objective standard whereas the standard should have been subjective based on the statute. The intermediate appellate court argued that the emphasis in the phrase “he reasonably believes” is on “he”. That becomes a subjective standard because we’re not interested in what a reasonable person would do, but rather whether the defendant thought he was doing a reasonable thing.

The thing is that the defendant will obviously think that what he’s doing is reasonable. But the defendant may be an unreasonable person.

The Court of Appeals of New York rules that the statute was meant to create an objective standard. But how objective did the legislature intend it to be? Who is that reasonable person?

How can it be justifiable to kill an objectively innocent person? We might excuse someone for it, but maybe it wouldn’t be justified. The common law says, on the other hand, that such an act would not be justified, but rather excused. Dressler argues that this could create a situation where two people could justifiably kill each other.

State v. Wanrow – The jury may “stand in the shoes” of the defendant in assessing whether his or her conduct was justified. The basic issue in this case is bringing gender into the discussion of the reasonable person. What does this case stand for? Does this mean that a woman who uses self-defense must be judged by the standard of a reasonable woman, or must she be judged by the objective standard of a reasonable person? The ruling says that the defendant’s actions must be judged subjectively, not objectively. After this case, case law has clarified this result to mean that they use a “reasonable woman” standard. The Model Penal Code chooses “designedly ambiguous” language to describe the standard of behavior: “a reasonable person in the actor’s situation”.

State v. Norman – If North Carolina applies the common law, why isn’t Norman entitled to a self-defense claim? It rests on the meaning of the word “imminent”. At common law, this term means “just about right now”. We’re talking seconds, not minutes or hours or days or weeks. Since that’s not what we have in Norman, the Supreme Court of North Carolina represents the traditional view. Under the ruling of this case and in most common law jurisdictions, Norman would not even be entitled to an instruction on the justification of self-defense.

Does syndrome evidence arguably turn a justification defense into an excuse?

“Self-protection” and the Model Penal Code

§ 3.04(2)(b)(i) deals with one limitation on the use of deadly force: the defendant mustn’t provoke the use of force with the purpose of causing death or serious bodily injury. The Model Penal Code says that § 3.04(2)(b)(ii) says that you can’t use self-defense if you can retreat, except if you’re in your own home or you’re a public officer. The Model Penal Code, as well as common law, treats human life very, very highly. The sanctity of human life is valued so highly that the law doesn’t even want “bad guys” killed unless it’s absolutely necessary. Thus, it’s very difficult under the Model Penal Code and at common law to win on a self-defense claim.

The Model Penal Code doesn’t focus on the amount of time before the actor will be killed, rather, it focuses on the actor to figure out if it is necessary now to use deadly force against the victim.

§ 3.04. This statute uses the word “immediately necessary” rather than “imminent”. The provision is general. The deadly force provision is § 3.04(2)(b). Even if you meet § 3.04(1), there are additional conditions in order for a valid justification to be constructed.

If an actor’s belief is sincere but reckless or negligent, the actor isn’t justified as far as reckless or negligent offenses. If the defendant was negligent in believing that a toy gun was actually real, then under the Model Penal Code the defendant wouldn’t be guilty of murder. The defendant would be guilty of negligent homicide if the defendant was negligent, and the defendant would be guilty of manslaughter if the defendant was reckless.

What the Model Penal Code does that is dramatically different from common law is that it doesn’t like the “all-or-nothing” proposition. In the three situations above, the defendant is not guilty in the first case, not guilty in the second case, but fully guilty in the third case. On the other hand, the Model Penal Code allows conviction for a lesser crime in the third case.

Necessity

Three elements are required in order to show necessity: (1) The act charged must have been done to prevent a significant evil. (2) There must have been no adequate alternative. (3) The harm caused must not have been disproportionate to the harm avoided.

Nelson v. State – There’s a balancing test here between the harm actually caused and the harm averted by the act. That’s the very definition of necessity.

The drafters of the Model Penal Code § 3.02 thought the necessity defense was essential because we want to encourage sort of “efficient breach” of the law. If obeying the law involves greater harm to society than breaking the law, we want people to break it. This is kind of a belt to keep the legislature’s pants from falling down in exceptional situations. If the legislature would have said “Yes, break the law in this case”, then we want to let the offender off the hook. It would be irrational to want people to obey the law if we believed that the legislature in a certain situation would say “do break the law” because that would result in a better outcome for society than obeying the law.

Although necessity (or the “choice of evils” justification defense) is typically thought of as a utilitarian justification because of its balancing aspect, it can also be viewed in non-utilitarian terms by comparing the moral value of one choice of action against another.

A defendant must actually believe that his conduct is necessary to avert a greater evil (and not an equal or lesser evil). The necessity defense doesn’t help you if you recklessly or negligently created the necessity.

The Queen v. Dudley and Stephens – This is the single most important case in Anglo-American jurisprudence to deal with the following question: is it ever justifiable to kill an innocent person in order to save a greater number of innocent persons? The court suggests that sometimes the law has to set up standards that we can’t really live up to. Can we punish someone when we all would have done the same thing?

If you’re a retributivist, then it is never right to kill an innocent person in order to save a greater number of innocent lives. If you’re a Kantian, you believe that you must never use a person as a means to an end rather than as an end in itself. That’s what Dudley and Stephens did with Parker: they used him as a means to an end, violating what Kant would say is a categorical imperative.

Excuse

Excuse focuses on the actor, not the act. Excuse concedes that the act was bad, but there was something about the actor such that we’re willing to let them go without punishment. When we use an excuse defense, the burden of proof is placed on the defendant.

Bentham says that an excuse is a defense when their conduct was nondeterrable. The only use for punishment, in a utilitarian view, is deterrence. Therefore, if there is no value to punishment and only a net social cost, we shouldn’t punish.

However, say there are some people who are genuinely undeterrable. There may still be some utilitarian value in punishing an undeterrable person due to specific deterrence or incapacitation. What about the general deterrence value in punishing an undeterrable person? If we excuse an undeterrable person, someone else might get the wrong message. Someone else might believe that they can convince a jury that they are undeterrable. Generally speaking, they may be less likely to obey the law because they will perceive it as full of holes.

Retributivists say that we have excuses because we don’t want to blame those who were not responsible for their actions. To blame someone who is not responsible for his actions is a falsehood. It is a matter of justice to excuse certain people even though they have caused some social harm.

Excuse law is now explained almost exclusively by some sort of retributive theory rather than utilitarian theory. Even the utilitarian argument has a retributivist aspect to it.

Our theories of excuse are: (1) Utilitarian theories, (2) causation, (3) character, and (4) choice (personhood).

Duress

Duress is an excuse and not a justification. Most jurisdictions treat it in this way. At common law, duress is no excuse for murder. In the Model Penal Code, however, there is no murder exception.

United States v. Contento-Pachon – There are three elements of the duress defense, according to the court: (1) immediacy of the threat, (2) well-grounded fear of the threat, and (3) lack of escapability from the threat.

Another way of describing duress as an excuse is that a person will be acquitted of any crime other than murder if: (1) the coercer issues an unlawful threat to imminently kill or grievously injure the defendant or another person, and (2) the defendant was not at fault in exposing himself to the threat.

The court also says that a necessity defense suggests that there was no social harm on balance. On the other hand, the court says that duress suggests there was no culpability. The court therefore implies that necessity is a justification rather than an excuse.

The Model Penal Code definition of duress is revolutionary compared to the common law. It’s different from the common law definition in many different ways. There is a limit to duress under Model Penal Code § 3.02: the threat listed is “unlawful force”. Only humans can do unlawful things. The Model Penal Code is like the common law in the fact that it limits the defense of duress to human threats. However, under the category of necessity, the Model Penal Code would allow either natural or human threats. The Model Penal Code is well aware of this. It says that even if § 3.02 applies, § 2.09 may still apply if you’re dealing with a human threat.

What’s different about the Model Penal Code provision on duress than the common law? In the Model Penal Code, there need not be an imminent threat. Also, under the Model Penal Code, a “kill or be killed” threat could work as an excuse: there is no murder exclusion. Finally, it is a “person of reasonable firmness” standard. It’s an objective rather than a subjective standard.

People v. Anderson – At common law, duress was not a defense to murder. Some intentional killings, if they are the result of provocation, reduce murder to manslaughter. But this isn’t a heat of passion case. Adequate provocation makes someone angry which makes them intentionally kill. It’s a lot harder to control yourself when you’re very angry. When we’ve very angry, our self-control is undermined. But we don’t think one’s self-control is fully undermined by anger. When you’re angry, you could do a lot of things other than kill. You could vent your anger in some other way.

Why couldn’t you have fear in place of anger in “heat of passion”? Fear is an emotion that is like anger in that it makes self-control more difficult. We may be able to empathize more with fear than with anger.

Anderson’s point is that if you give a defense for killings caused by adequate provocation leading to anger leading to the intent to kill, then it follows that you should give a similar defense with fear in the place of anger. Dressler seems to argue for just such a partial defense.

The Model Penal Code would actually agree with Anderson, although they wouldn’t use duress to get there and they wouldn’t use the “heat of passion” excuse. You would go straight to manslaughter based on the fact that the homicide was committed under “extreme emotional distress”. The Model Penal Code necessity defense allows the intentional killing of an innocent person to save a greater number of lives. In a Model Penal Code jurisdiction, you could have a complete defense.

California Penal Code 653k Legal knife stuff. But note, no mention of length; any length is therefore ok. Dirks, daggers, fixed blades, folders etc. are legal. Switchblades, cane knives, etc. are illegal.

California Penal Code 12020 Street Carry Laws...Fixed blades must be openly carried; note any possible weapon, i.e. a screwdriver carried concealed can be considered a dagger and you could be in violation. Non switchblade pocket knives that are in the closed position can legally be carried concealed or open carry.

California Penal Code 626.10 Basically, don't carry a knife K-12. However on a college campus while you may not carry a fixed blade, you may carry a folder of any length.

Los Angeles City Ordinance I am sorry, I don't know the Ordinance, but I do know that LA prohibits open carry (and remember State Law says no concealed carry for a fixed blade) of ANY knife over 3". This would include folders. However, if you carry your folder 100% concealed, and it is over 3", this would seem to be legal but...

NOTE, nowhere in any CA Law (in contrast to some other states) is INTENT mentioned. Intent is not an issue until you use the knife; but that is a whole other discussion.

Carrying in California, Fixed Religious Blade Knife Law

Penal Code section 12020 prohibits carrying a concealed dirk or dagger on your person, in public or private, no matter what length. Under California law, almost any pointy thing, including steak knives and knitting needles, can be a dirk or dagger. (People v. Rubalcava (2000) 23 Cal.4th 322.)

Beyond these general prohibitions, it is illegal to possess a knife with a fixed blade (or one which can be fixed) of over four inches in any state or local public building without written permission or at any meeting required to be open to the public. (Penal Code section 171b.) A knife with a fixed or fixable blade in excess of four inches is illegal to possess in the "sterile area" of an airport. (Penal Code section 171.5--good luck getting it past security in the first place.)

It is generally unlawful to have a dirk or dagger on a school ground (including colleges), as well as fixed blade knives (which would appear to be dirks or daggers anyway), and any knife with a blade over 2.5 inches. (Penal Code section 626.10.)

Under State law, the only knives upon which there is a general length prohibition is switchblade/butterfly knives, which cannot be carried if the blade is 2" or more in length. Pen C 653k.) No dirk or dagger, which means a fixed blade knife (or folding knife with a blade in a fixed open position) can be carried concealed on the person. (Pen C 12020.) True - the politicians are often wending the way of corruption... Perhaps that can change, and perhaps not. Corruption is the way of the world... - what can be done?

You may consider that there is value to carrying a knife with you, even in the forest... - you may find its use while carrying it - and you may find its use while you do not.

I believe that your emphasis on the allegorical dismisses the plain meaning of Yeshua's statement, the literal, which gives meaning to the allegorical all the more.

If one becomes strong in the truth-sword word of the tongue, there is little need to face an enemy with a sword, unless there is a dire situation. But one cannot deny the plain injunction by emphasizing the allegoric alone.

I carry a knife and fulfill this plain statement of Yeshua... it is interesting that a shirt and a short-sword run about the same cost...

It would seem that these are commands for those "in the world" - bring your wallet, money, and sword - and if you don't have a sword - sell your shirt and get one.

Saying "it is enough" is akin to saying, "Enough (talk of this)." But it is clear that they counted their (physical) swords...

22:37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

Given the prohibition of carrying a sword under Roman law, they would be counted as transgressors, or outlaws, for doing so.

Two swords were made enough for twelve because they resisted the simple command, not because they followed it.

The sword is to be used to protect the innocent from harm.

Of special note is that Peter carried a sword (for real) and was told to "put it in its place" - which is at ready, on the hip.

Matthew 26:52 Then said Yeshua unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

He didn't say, "why are you carrying a sword, Oh rock of my Ecclesia" but rather, "put away the sword, to its place, and take not to it (so quickly), lest you be caught in its samsara."

I find that the literal is the basis of the allegorical...
so I ask you -
have you a sword to fulfill this commandment?
If not - perhaps you might consider selling a real shirt to buy one... you may not know how deeply the symbolism will come alive with it "in its place" - even as you sharpen your tongue in the truth...oh Sister!

The purpose of the sword (or gun) is for self-defense and the protection of the innocent - and should be kept 'in its place' and not misused.

Matthew Henry says, "He that has no sword wherewith to defend himself against robbers and assassins will find a great want (need) of it and will...wish some time or other, that he had sold his garment and bought one (a sword)...

Yeshua sent his disciples without anything only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel, but when he sent them to the Gentiles - he didn't just say "buy a sword, if you have the money" - but rather, even if you can't afford it, take the shirt from your back and buy one! How clear is this command, dear sister.

"Jesus told them—didn’t ask or mildly suggest—but told His buddies to sell their leather jacket if need be and buy a sword. The sword which Christ told his compadres to purchase was not a QVC decorative Claymore to hang on their walls to commemorate the good times they had when Christ was around. Are you familiar with the Gospel of Thomas? Verse 16 is:
Jesus said, "Perhaps people think that I have come to cast peace upon the world. They do not know that I have come to cast conflicts upon the earth: fire, SWORD, war.

For there will be five in a house: there'll be three against two and two against three, father against son and son against father, and they will stand alone.

He said to sell your shirt and buy a sword, and then he also said that he cast a Sword upon the world... the literal seems hard to deny, even with the allegorical - especially when we see Peter 'packin'.

To me, this takes on fuller meaning if you actually practice with your sword in your house...for the allegory and the literal are not two, dear sister, but one. The powerful one could be the assailant coming into your home - which the Torah states you have the right to kill (no blood shall be upon your hands) if he comes at night, and it can also be seen as referencing the fear you would feel toward the idea of "fighting"...

I welcome your reflections in this regard.

The first level of understanding is PASHAT (simple). The Pashat is the literal meaning. It is similar to what Protestant hermeneutics calls "Grammatical Historical Exogesis" and also similar to what Protestant Hermeneutics calls "The Literal Principle."

The PASHAT is the plain, simple meaning of the text; understanding scripture in its natural, normal sense using the customary meanings of the words being used, in accordance with the primary exegetical rule in the Talmud that no passage loses its PASHAT (b.Shab. 63a; b.Yeb. 24a). While there is figurative language (like Ps. 36:7) symbolism (like Rom. 5:14); allegory (like Gal. 4:19-31) and hidden meanings (like Rev. 13:18; see also 1Cor. 2:7) in the Scriptures, the first thing to look for is the literal meaning or PASHAT.
The following rules of thumb can be used to determine if a passage is figurative and therefore figurative even in its PASHAT:

Turning the other cheek to a slap is far different than turning the other cheek to a rape, murder or torture, for example.

"If you look at this parallel account of the night Jesus was betrayed, you will see Jesus warn them to be prepared and arm themselves. He contrasts the first time he sent them out when they lacked nothing, with this time, when they needed to be ready. In verse 36 he tells them to buy a sword if they didn't have one. In verse 38 they tell him that they have two swords and he says that that is enough. Jesus needed them to be prepared for self-defense in the garden that night. For the allegory to work, you have to take the statement out of context and begin replacing the meanings of the words he used.

The 10 Commandments are often quoted to say it is never OK to take a mans life because the word “kill” is used it the 6th. Commandment, which seems contrary to many other commands of God. Why? Newer translations rightly translate the word “murder. Now that makes sense, and helps very much to understand so much of the OT. Is God then saying that there is a right time to take a life and a wrong time, as in Ecclesiastics when it says, ‘a time to kill and a time to heal’? Lets keep looking.

New Testament
Is the NT God somehow a different God from that of the OT? Some believe so, but is that true? To find outlets look at Jesus words, after all, He is the very center of history and scripture for the Christian; and also at Paul the apostle, who wrote at least 13 books of the NT. The dagger and the sword, in NT times, was not used for spanking a child, but for delivering a death blow as a weapon and these were about as close as you could get to the hand gun and the rifle in our day. We must keep this in mind while examining these, words’.

Jesus
Here we are going to find that Jesus gives us the simple word on the matter and straightens this out once and for all, right? Not so fast. Just because Jesus is often quoted as a complete pacifist, especially by those who favor a ‘nonviolent’ lifestyle, or at least a ban on guns, does not necessarily make it so. Here we find Jesus also making some pretty heavy statements. He says things about ‘turning the other cheek’, and ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’. Then He makes a statement like, ‘Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.’,,

that workers routinely carried weapons

in the first century might think twice
before attacking a man armed with such a

intended for ___the righteous person defending
themselves from attack,___ but it is

Tis the way of the world. I do sometimes carry a knife, although I live
outside of the city where there are lots of trees and fresh air and I don't
often feel that I need one, although that may change as well. The
reference you make to Yeshua saying sell your shirt and buy a sword
should be examined from an allegorical view. A shirt denoting an
external covering, as in what ways of the world is one covered in.
Also in scripture a sword has often been used to describe the tongue,
as in a two edged sword in speaking truth. When one speaks truth
it acts as a sword that cuts to the bone as it is written. Truth
revealed and spoken can cut through the ways of the world that
cover us as a shirt would. But I would still carry the knife depending
on where you live.

The Khalsa order was established on March 30th 1699 by the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

The name Khalsa means 'Pure'.

The Khalsa are Sikhs who have undergone the sacred ceremony of Amrit.

Upon initiation to the order of the Khalsa a Sikh must follow strictly the rules which are assigned by the order, one of the rule being the attire a Sikh wears.

[It isn't that strict - but more of a foundation! One might say it helps to accomplish the basics of life!]

Five items must be kept on a Sikh at all times these are detailed below:

Kesh – uncut hair to represent the natural appearance of sainthood. It is argued by some that the requirement is Keski instead, a small turban to be worn underneath a bigger turban. However the latter idea is not contradictory to the former, since the purpose of the Keski is to preserve the kesh.
Kanga – a small comb.
Kaccha – warrior short trousers, also denotes chastity.
Kara – steel bangle as a sign of restraint and bondage, and a symbol of dedication to the Guru. Guru Gobind Singh proclaimed that by wearing Kara all fears will be removed.
Kirpan – a sword for defense. The Kirpan is a symbol of dignity, power and courage. Kirpan is from Kirpa (act of kindness, Sanskrit) + Aan (self respect, Persian).

The Kirpan in no way signifies aggression or some kind of warlike attitude, its meaning is much deeper, it signifies the defense of those who are weak, for the protection of the Sikh people and to uphold what is right.

[For the Spiritual Warrior, this should be easy to understand. The Gita reprimands Arjuna: "fight!" Defending the family is natural, even if hard to imagine for some.]

Its shows the power, dignity, and courage held within a Sikh a power that can only be worn by those who are devout to the order of the Khalsa and know when and why it can be used.

[It is really the same for all who carry a blade in a spiritual manner.]

It is also a reminder to the bearer of there duty to defend the weak and those who are unable to defend themselves, not to cower away from there duty as a Khalsa.

[The hammer doesn't just remind the builder to build - It Facilitates it! It is his Tool! With the 'right tool for the job' - he doesn't struggle unnecessarily. Would you rather bring a knife to a knife fight, or even a gun fight - or merely your hand and foot?]

The tenth Guru himself stated that the sword could only be lifted when all other means to negotiate had failed, the lifting of the sword is a last resort.

[I am confident that context would show that this was not lifting the sword in aggression - but rather lifting it out of necessary defense - just as the Qur'an instructs, but is so often misinterpreted about.]

The Kirpan can only be used in self-defense and is in no way as an offensive weapon.

[This is an error. It is meant to be used NOT ONLY in self-defense - but PRIMARILY in defense of the weak! The women, aged and children - will you let them be slaughtered, standing by, doing nothing? No?!? Then, hold ready your weapon for the evil which lurks in this world - and don't be holding the oil-lamp lacking oil when your hour has come! Yeah - it would benefit you even to sell your finest clothes and buy a blade - than to forsake your duty and allow a life to be silenced because you chose to remain defenseless, not only OF YOUR SELF - but of all Who Might Call Upon YOUR Aid; the Aid which God Transmits Lovingly Thru You - the Aid that He allows you to call "mine", in speech, all the while, knowing, deep down: it is His; everything is His; I am His...All is His.

Did meat play a role in the Buddha’s death?

It is claimed by some that the Buddha died because he ate putrid meat, thought to be pork. It is also asserted that he condoned eating meat if you did not know, hear or suspect that the animal was killed specifically for your own consumption.

[It is therefore inferred by those same people that since he died from "eating pork", he ate meat in his lifetime. Yet, he clearly forbids it; recall!]

The first point has been researched by scholars and the majority of them conclude it was not meat but a poisonous truffle (a type of mushroom) that killed the Buddha.

[It is most reasonable to look for other interpretations, given the veg. diet presented by the Buddha's Teachings directly!]

The word truffles was given as a translation for sukara-maddava. Arthur Waley in his article "Did the Buddha Die of Eating Pork?" says that sukara-maddava has four interpretations:

a pigs soft food.
pigs delight i.e.; a favorite food of pigs.
soft parts of a pig.
pig pounded i.e.; food trampled by pigs.

[Colloquial phrases are often the most difficult to translate, too often taken out of context or literally.]

The scholar K. E. Neumann has shown that in Narahari’s, Rajanighantu among the names of medical plants there occurs a whole series of compound words having pig as their first element. For example sukara-kanda means pig bulb; sukara-padika means pigs foot and sukareshita means sought out by pigs. Neumann takes sukara-maddava to mean pigs delight and assumes that it is the name of some type of truffle.

[The recorders of the events of the Buddha's Life could have saved us all this trouble by simply mentioning what exactly, from where, the Buddha died from, rather than simply the local name.]

Waley further points out:

Plant names tend to be local and dialectical. It is quite likely that if such an expression sukara-maddava means truffles in Maghada (the Buddha’s home) it might, in the more western and southern centers in India where Pali Buddhism came into existence, have been entirely unknown and therefore misinterpreted.

[Exactly! It is called 'the Common Name' - and most plants have quite a few! It depends on where it grows - one place called one thing, elsewhere: something totally different!]

Edward Thomas referring to the controversial sukara-maddava in his "Life of The Buddha", notes this word however, is not the obvious sukara-mamsa (pig flesh) which we would expect if this were meant.

[Maddhava is a spiritual word meaning joy. The word-combo means literally 'pigs joy'. Note that there is a totally different word that means 'pig flesh!' Different indeed!]

Mrs. Rhys David in her book "A Manual of Buddhism" casts the "pigs flesh" interpretation into further doubt when she observes;

A food compound of pig flesh (sukara-mamas) does occur in the scriptures, in a Sutta of a curiously unworthy kind where a householder inviting Gotama to dine, goes through quite a menu in a refrained detail. In the literature Maddava is nowhere else associated with meat, and I remain of Rhys David’s opinion that we have here a dish… of a root, such as truffles, much sought by swine, and which may have been called pigs joy. We have such a root - this the critics did not know - in our "pig nut"… the little nut shaped bulbous root which are also called "earth nuts", these are eaten and enjoyed by both pigs and children.

[Many different names for the same thing. We might as well say, Buddha's Joy was compassion - and he died compassionately eating the Joy of the Piggies.]

Overview

It should be remembered that the First Precept prohibits killing. It also makes anyone who causes another to take a life equally culpable. One of the forbidden professions is butchering. Specifically the fifth step of the Eight Fold Path as taught by Buddha "Right Livelihood" forbids the following trades to laymen, much less monks: trading in weapons, breathing things, meat, and poisons. Further it was has been stated in various Sutras that monks should pass their drinking water through a strainer before drinking it so as not to kill living things in the water. In fact, one of the items a monk was required to carry was a water strainer!

[Why do some assume that the Buddha was preaching love and compassion and non-killing and abstention from even wearing leather, straining water and the like - but that he was a meat eater, even a pork eater - of which he died? As Mr. T would say: "I pity the fool who thinks that the Gracious Buddha stooped to eating animals after being enlightened and preaching unto others to do the very opposite." Just have a look to the below and note the scriptural teachings on vegetarianism attributed to the Buddha, and then line it up next to the hear-say (heresy) of the Buddha eating meat and dying from it. The Buddha explicitly states: "...how can the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who desires to approach all living beings as if they were himself and to practice the Buddha-truths, eat the flesh of any living being that is of the same nature as himself?" This has been a divinely inspired commentary by Baba Shrivastava Amitabha: Khyem Yeshua, Amri. May all beings live and eat in peace and love. Om.]

It should be noted that there are two main classes of scriptures in Buddhism, those of the Pali Cannon which form the foundation of Theravada Buddhism and the Mahayana which represents the Buddhism of China, Japan, Korea, etc. The Pali Cannon was written around 80 BC and the Mahayana in approximately 100 to 400 AD.

In the Chapter entitled "The enlightenment of others" and the section Prohibition against Killing, page 154. The Buddha said:

"If a man can (control) his body and mind and thereby refrains from eating animal flesh and wearing animal products, I say he will really be liberated."

Also from the Surangama Sutra:

"The reason for practicing dhyana and seeking to attain Samadhi is to escape from the suffering of life, but in seeking to escape from the suffering ourselves why should we inflict it upon others? Unless you can so control your minds that even the thought of brutal unkindness and killing is abhorrent, you will never be able to escape from the bondage of the world’s life…After my Parinirvana in the last kalpa different kinds of ghosts will be encountered everywhere deceiving people and teaching them that they can eat meat and still attain enlightenment… How can a bhikshu, who hopes to become a deliverer of others, himself be living on the flesh of other sentient beings?"

Brahmajala Sutra, (What the Teaching is Not), from the Pali Canon; "Long Discourses of the Buddha", Sutta 1: Translation by Maurice Walshe pages 69 and 70.

"Whereas some ascetics and Brahmins, feeding on the food of the faithful, remain addicted to the enjoyment of stored-up goods such as food, drink, clothing, carriages, beds, perfumes and meat, the ascetic Gotama refrains from such enjoyment."

Lankavatara Sutra (Mahayana) translated from Sanskrit by D. T. Suzuki. This Sutra was a discussion of the fundamental concepts of Mahayana Buddhism. Chapter Eight is entirely devoted to the prohibition of meat eating.

"The Blessed One said this to him: For innumerable reasons, Mahamati, the Boddhisattva, whose nature is compassion, is not to eat any meat."

"Now, Mahamati, the food I have permitted (my disciples to take) is gratifying to all wise people but is avoided by the unwise; it is productive of many merits, it keeps away many evils; and it has been prescribed by the ancient Rishis. It comprises rice, barley, wheat, kidney beans, beans, lentils, etc., clarified butter, oil, honey, molasses, treacle, sugar cane, coarse sugar, etc.; food prepared with these is proper food."

"If, Mahamati, meat is not eaten by anybody for any reason, there will be no destroyer of life. Mahamati, in the majority of cases the slaughtering of innocent living beings is done for pride and very rarely for other causes."

"It is not true, Mahamati, that meat is proper food and permissible for the Sravaka ( a hearer, hence a pupil or beginner) when (the victim) was not killed by himself, when he did not order others to kill it. When it was not specially meant for him."

Third Less Grave Precept:

On eating meat.

"Disciples of the Buddha, should you willingly and knowingly eat flesh, you defile yourself by acting contrary to this less grave Precept. Pray, let us not eat any flesh or meat whatsoever coming from living beings."

The Buddha is reported to have said:

"I have allowed fish and meat that is pure in the three aspects; when it is not seen or heard or suspected to have been killed for one personally."

Pali Canon, Majjhima Nikaya, Javaka Sutta, verse 5

"Jivaka, I say that there are three instances in which meat should not be eaten: when it is seen, heard, or suspected (that the living being has been slaughtered for the bhikkhu).

I say that meat should not be eaten in these three instances. I say that there are three instances in which meat may be eaten: when it is not seen, not heard, and not suspected (that the living being has been slaughtered for the bhikkhu). I say that meat may be eaten in these three instances.

The above may be found in "The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha" by Bhikkhu Nanamoli and Bhikkhu Bodhi pg. 474.

Summary:

It should be remembered that in the Buddha’s time the monks existed solely by begging and that it was not possible to turn away meat without offending the giver or for that matter, the animal from which the meat came. Further it was not always possible to have vegetables due to climatic and soil conditions as evidenced by the following taken from the Chapter on "The Enlightenment of Others" / Prohibition against killing in the Surangama Sutra, pg. 153:

"Ananda, I permit the Bhikkhus to eat only the five kinds of pure flesh which are the product of my transcendental power of transformation and not of animal slaughter. You, Brahman, live in a country where vegetables do not grow because it is too damp and hot and because of all the gravel and rock. I use my power of compassion to provide you with illusory meat to satisfy your appetite. How then, after my nirvana, can you eat the flesh of living beings and so pretend to be my disciple?"

In the Lankavatara Sutra the Buddha said; "Mahamati, in this long course of transmigration here, there is not one living being that, having assumed the form of a living being, has not been your mother, or father, or brother, or sister, or son, or daughter, or the one or the other, in various degrees of kinship; and when acquiring another form of life may live as a beast, as a domestic animal, as a bird, or as a womb-born, or as something standing in some relationship to you; (this being so) how can the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who desires to approach all living beings as if they were himself and to practice the Buddha-truths, eat the flesh of any living being that is of the same nature as himself?

The Buddha may have permitted monks to eat meat under very limited circumstances. Would he allow monks to eat meat today? It is very doubtful, as there are many alternatives to meat and the Buddha clearly indicated that not eating meat was preferable if at all possible.

my enzyme had this - and i tested it - now in pain the next day - and teeth and jaw hurts and shooting pain - in right shoulder and neck...
only now do I look up malto-d after I had reasoned it to the only culprit and made the guess that it was more than rice and was either corn or perhaps gluten, though I was confident it was GF...actually, it may not be - so it could be corn, wheat, or even a combo! Also, I still react to things that have been supposedly rendered gf - there's enough trace to really 'f' my world for two days!!:

Maltodextrin is gluten free. It can be made from a variety of starches, including corn, potato, rice or wheat. However the source does not matter because maltodextrin is such a highly processed ingredient that the protein is removed, rendering it gluten free. If wheat is used to make maltodextrin, "wheat" will be appear on the label. Even in this case, the maltodextrin would be gluten free.

Isn't devaluing our "dollar" thru inflation more detrimental in the short and long run?

Letter to Obama about Hemp Economic Stimulus - Not Marijuana - No THC!

Dear Barack Obama,

I respect what you do and where you are going. That being said, please consider broadening your perspective on the implications of the lawful endorsement, rather the end to a needless prohibition, in the use of Hemp - /not Marijuana/, but Hemp which has negligible THC content and can be used to grow our economy, in an eco-friendly, "green" way....

According to Herer's research, "Farming only 6 percent of the continental U.S. acreage with biomass [from hemp] crops would provide all of Americans' gas and oil energy needs, ending dependence upon fossil fuels." Think about that! If we would just farm only 6% of our available acreage, we would end our dependency upon foreign countries!

Talk about reducing foregin dependence on oil; we would have the potential to eliminate it!

He added, "Each acre of hemp would yield 1,000 gallons of methanol. Fuels from hemp, along with the recycling of paper, etc., would be enough to run America virtually without oil." Herer explained the versatility of hemp by saying, "It can be grown in virtually any climate or soil condition on Earth, even marginal ones."

It would seem that others have presented this issue, that of making available the use of a benign plant with limitless possibilities to aid the economy.

Mr. President, why are Americans paying Canada (and others) to grow her hemp fiber and seeds?
Why would we do that, when we could easily grow it ourselves - and even Export it at a profit!?
Also, why would we think of banning - or in our situation, maintaining a ban on such a versatile and useful plant? A plant, no less, that was the paper for the Declaration of Independance, the Sails for the Mayflower, the Currency of the Early colonies, and, truly, Mr. President - a plant that has so many values as a Highly Renewable Resource! Should we now reconsider allowing farmers to grow and sell hemp (which cannot be smoked and doesn't get you high) - and allow other industries to make textiles and other commodities from her bounty? Doesn't the economy need something bold and new right now, and yet tried and true? Is there any good reason why hemp is currently banned??? Mr. President, I beg your attention - truly this is an issue of national importance. I, and certainly others, are not asking you to "legalize marijuana"...We are asking you to **Restore Hemp to Her Original Beauty as one of the Chief Commodities available for Reaping from the Abundance of our Beautiful, God-Blessed, United States of America.

I pray that the Lord will move your heart to address this and dialogue about it,
and still further that He will show you the wisdom in this plant that He hath made.
Genesis 1.29 - Hemp is food, and fuel, and fiber...
We can feed, fuel and clothe our nation with this single herb bearing seed!
Let the issue of Marijuana (containing THC) come later...
you needn't legalize now, nor will you likely, even for all the pros, there are many cons.
However, what are the cons of releasing for use, a plant, who has no narcotic/drug/medicinal properties/effects - but has purely Economic Stimulus Potential?
I believe that there are none. (Except perhaps to competing business interests.)

We need to legalize Hemp!

	Judges 21:21-23 21And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances (mecholah), then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty. 23And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.

Ok! But these are all Old Testament! Does the New Testament have anything to say about dancing? Let’s look and see…this time in Greek…

Orcheomai: to dance; a dance from ranklike or regular motion.

	Matthew 11:17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

	Luke 7:32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

Agalliao: to jump for joy: to exult; to rejoice.

	Matthew 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

	Luke 1:46-47 46And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

	Luke 10:21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
		Could this be the same concerning dance? Has it been hidden for and season, and is now being revealed to “babes”, or to those with a heart to embrace it?

Choros: a band of dancers and singers; circular dance; a ring that is round.

	Luke 15:25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing.
		In this story of the Prodigal Son, there was much rejoicing and dancing because the lost son had returned home.

What else can be said? If scripture commands us even once to praise Him with dance, are we not bound to do so if we really love Him and want to honor him?

Failure to Thrive? What!?

My flesh-mother recently told me that I was "failing to thrive, anorexic, malnourished...and likely going to die very soon." Oddly, she told me this in an email on mother's day...
But I ask you, my audience, alongside her, does this look like a failure to thrive to you?

Anybody including women, merchants,

laborers, (musicians?), and the evil-minded

can attain the Supreme Abode

by just surrendering unto My will with loving devotion. (9.32)
